The Cotswolds area of the United Kingdom is full of English countryside charm, but what is the perfect time to visit the Cotswolds?

Read any Cotswolds travel guide and the best travel books and you will quickly learn that with endless nature walks and chocolate box villages such as Castle Combe, Bibury, Broadway and Stanton, the Cotswolds region is world-renowned and visited all year round by tourists from all over the world.

The British weather is notoriously unpredictable, sunny days in Winter are just as common as winter gloom, and school holidays can be busy in the Cotswolds - so what is the best time of year to visit the Cotswolds? Here we explore each season in detail and discover the best months to visit.

The Cotswolds in the Spring

The beautiful Cotswold countryside, Cotswold attractions and charming villages of the Cotswolds come alive from their Winter hibernation during the spring months as tourismincreases.

Visitors to the Cotswolds will enjoy lengthening daylight hours and mild weather that springtime presents, with temperatures averaging 11-15 degrees centigrade.

Gardens of the Cotswolds are at their most beautiful during the spring as blossom fills the parks and gardens across the region, the precursor to gardens in full bloom. Sudeley Castle, Blenheim Palace, Hidcote Manor Garden and Kiftsgate Gardens are wonderful places to visit (check exact opening times).

Take the kids to the Cotswold Farm Park, where you may even see some new-born lambs during your visit.

While Lavender is usually regarded as a summer-blooming flower, some Lavender plants are early bloomers with their magnificent blooms appearing early in spring. Cotswold Lavender near Snowshill is a great place to visit to witness nature at its finest. It usually opens for the season in June, but check their website for exact dates.

March is typically the driest month in the Cotswolds, and with Summer events a few months away it can be a great time to visit the Cotswolds if you want to avoid the peak tourist season.

The Cotswolds in Summer

The Cotswolds usually experience the best weather and busiest times during the summer months with many of the region's key events taking place. Some would say this is the best season to visit the Cotswolds and see the beautiful countryside at its finest. Just remember, this is Britain and there's always a chance of rain!

The region's timeless villages seem even more beautiful on warmer days, bathed in Summer sunshine. Walks and hikes across rolling hills and undulating landscapes of the Cotswolds come alive during the better weather.

Walkers will love the miles and miles of footpaths and trails, the Cotswold Way being a particular favourite. The Cotswold Way is a 102 mile long path from Chipping Campden to Bath and can be tackled in one go, or split into more manageable sections.

Some towns and villages see a huge increase in visitor numbers over the Summer. But if you are worried that the area will be overrun with tourists at honeypot locations then remember that quiet countryside is never far away.

The Cotswolds in Autumn

Autumn is a great time to visit the Cotswolds, not least because of the beautiful colours on display and the sight of fields full of crops ready for the harvest season.

Lush green slides into oranges and yellows as rust-coloured leaves line walking paths, woodland and narrow lanes. Colourful landscapes fill the horizon and autumnal photograph opportunities present themselves around every corner.

On a crisp, bright autumnal day, you can enjoy a walk around the likes of Westonbirt Arboretum near Tetbury and Batsford Arboretum near Moreton-in-Marsh. Both of these arboreta are home to a vast collection of trees, great to visit at any time of year but particularly magical during autumn.

If you have hiking plans then you can climb Cleeve Common, located just outside of the Gloucestershire town of Cheltenham, which is also enhanced by the Autumn's colours.

The Cotswolds in Winter

During the colder months of Winter, the Cotswolds takes on a magical feel. Crisp cold mornings, blue sky days and guest appearances from the sun bring a unique atmosphere to the area at this time of year. Heavy snowfall is rare, but even a light dusting can turn already beautiful small villages into chocolate box candidates.

And the Autumn lull, after the busy summer months, is followed by great activities to enjoy in the run up to Christmas including Christmas markets in Bath, Cheltenham, Chipping Campden and Cirencester.

Sudeley Castle's Spectacle of Light event is another highlight during the winter months.

Many people choose to visit the Cotswolds for a short break in the run up to Christmas to enjoy this magical time of year, and there's a great choice of places to stay in the Cotswolds, from charming guest houses to country hotels with an open fire for the ultimate cosy Cotswold escape - hopefully with a village pub nearby, serving traditional food!
