Driving whilst using a mobile phone

It amazes me just how many people I still see driving whilst using a mobile phone. I find it hard to work out what people are thinking when they decide to either make or receive a call whilst behind the steering wheel. I guess all they’re thinking about is that call.
Earlier today a car nearly collided into me in a car park – the reason being the driver was smoking and on his mobile phone, and wasn’t paying attention to the fact that they were other cars close by, whether he even saw me is debatable.
And the deterrent for doing this currently stands at three points on your license and a fine of £60. So let’s face it – if you get caught a £60 fine is unlikely to break the bank, and the possibility of points on your licence doesn’t seem to put people off. And how often do you actually see anyone getting pulled over for chatting on their mobile?
There doesn’t seem to be anyone who thinks this law applies to them, and that their phone call is somehow so important they have to take/ make it there and then, and that when they read about accidents caused by people whilst chatting on their mobiles – this won’t happen to them as they’re not distracted.
I know we live in a fast paced, time pressured environments, but are we really all leading such busy important lives that we’re wiling to risk our lives and others around us by chatting on our mobiles, does that call really have to be made at that second, or are we just showing off which latest mobile we own that is so technologically advanced it should be designed to drive the car for us..
