Herefordshire Walking Festival 2009 offers something for everyone with almost 60 guided walks to choose from.
The festival, running from June 13 to 21, features the Mortimer Trail which will be walked over three days of the first weekend (June 13 to 15) from Kington to Ludlow and ‘Every Inch of the Way’ covering the trail from Ludlow to Kington in a series of nine loop walks, one for each day of the festival.
Upper Monnow – Past, Present and Future is the theme for the weekend of June 19 to 21, which combines history from a knowledgeable local historian, with unspoiled rural landscape and delicious home-produced food.
Walks also offer a chance to learn from the experts on butterflies and birdwatching, archaeology, local lore, history of the market towns and a very special opportunity to compose better pictures with the help of travel photographer, Nick Meers.
Take the Farmhouse Cider and Orchard Tour, a short walk around the southern tip of the Malverns before retiring to an award winning ice-cream factory or just enjoy the cream teas, pub lunches or farmhouse suppers using local produce that accompany many of the walks during the nine days.
Family walks are organised at the weekends and offer some very special treats – try ‘Walking with Llamas’ around the Golden Valley, ‘Wild Play’ or a family walk for toddlers upwards in the grounds of the National Trust’s Brockhampton Estate.
Jane Lewis, Herefordshire Council’s cultural services manager, said: “June is a great time for walking – the first real month of summer with long days and sunny evenings – and Herefordshire is the perfect place to explore on foot.
“The festival walks cater for a variety of tastes and what better way is there to explore the hidden beauty of the best of English countryside,” she added.
The programme is available from early spring to download from www.walkingfestival.com, to order a copy from the Request a Brochure section of www.visitherefordshire.co.uk or by telephoning the Festival Booking Office on 01568 797842.
