Buckinghamshire County Council is to pilot a driver training programme aimed at the development of young drivers. The scheme is intended to be innovative, creative and will require the help of those driver trainers who not only have a passion for driving, but who actually believe they can inspire people to become better drivers.
Young drivers are more likely to be involved in a collision, especially within the first 6 months of passing their test. Local data has highlighted where and when and who is most likely to crash and even what type of crash they are most likely to be involved in. As the majority of crashes are down to human error (95%) then we obviously can’t engineer every solution and need to address the human factors, which is what this new course aims to do.
Val Letheren, Portfolio Holder for Transportation said “Road crashes are the biggest single killer of 15 – 24 year olds and we are continually trying to develop and improve training courses for young and novice drivers in an attempt to reduce this appalling statistic. Road deaths are preventable, but it needs a combined effort from parents, communities and the Government to educate people about road safety, which is why we are looking to involve the local community in this new young driver course”
Applicants should hold a current ADI qualification, a clean and valid driving licence and be familiar with training to the ‘Roadcraft’ driving system. They will need to be well presented, have a pleasant and understanding manner and be disciplined in keeping to time schedules and appointments.
