Herefordshire Council is encouraging people from across the county who may be interested in adopting a child, to attend an information morning on Saturday 15th September.

The county needs more adopters from across the community. In particular demand are those who would be able to welcome older children into their homes or who could consider more than one child. Adopters are also needed for children with disabilities and those affected by parental drug or alcohol use and for children from ethnic minorities or of dual heritage.

Herefordshire Council welcomes applicants from all ethnic backgrounds, whether single or with partners and regardless of sexual orientation; adopters must be emotionally and physically able to cope with the demands that will be made of them. There is a very thorough assessment process for anyone wishing to adopt, to ensure that it will be the right thing for them as well as any child placed with them.

The council is holding an adoption information mo

rning on Saturday
15th September from 10.30am-12.30pm at Moor House, Widemarsh Common, Hereford.   People interested in adoption can drop in, meet the adoption team, chat with adopters about their experiences and ask questions.  Refreshments and car parking are available.

The information morning will be informal, giving potential adopters a chance to think about the pros and cons of adopting, and an understanding of the process involved.

“We know there are people who have thought about adoption, but aren’t sure whether it’s right for them and are put off by what can often be a long assessment process,” said Hilary Hale, Adoption Team Manager.

“This is a great opportunity to explore adoption in more depth, share concerns and ask questions,” she continued.

“You don’t have to be rich or famous to adopt a child, but you do need to be a special person to be able to handle the often complex emotional issues that adopted children can have and can arouse in their parents.”
